On the tropical island of Martinique in the French West Indies, Depaz has set the gold standard for rum since 1651. DEPAZ HISTORY The Château Depaz Estate was established in 1651 by Martinique’s first governor, Jacques Duparquet and later acquired by the Depaz family. Situated at the foot of the famous Mont Pelée, an active volcano in northwestern Martinique, the estate’s château and acres of cane overlook the coastline of the city of Saint-Pierre. Mont Pelée erupted in 1902 and destroyed everything in its path, including the Depaz estate. The capital of Martinique at that time, Saint-Pierre, and its 30,000 residents were obliterated. Fortunately, one Depaz family survivor, Victor Depaz, had been studying in Bordeaux. He returned to Martinique 15 years after the eruption and began to rebuild his family’s extensive estate and distillery. The volcanic eruption left extremely fertile topsoil in which Victor planted the rare blue cane. Blue cane is the only cane that requires true volcanic soil to flourish. Today, the Depaz family is revered by the people of Martinique for the leading role the family played in the island’s agricultural development following the eruption.
