Description
Castelluccio is considered the first Wine Estate focusing on high quality wines in the Romagna region, the first which in the mid 70s focused in the creation of "cru" wines, an example been taken by many other today producers from the same area in the following years.
Lunaria takes its name from the "Lunaria" plant, also known in Italy as the "Pope's Coin" (in the US, Silver Dollars). The plants' nickname is derived from the roundish and flat shapeof the fruit, which, when dried, takes on a silvery appearance.
About the Vineyard: The vineyard's exposure is south, south-west at 1,300 ft. above sea level, and 18 miles from the Adriatic Sea. The Castelluccio property is composed of medium-loam clayey soil, creating an ideal condition for the cultivation of Sauvignon blanc. Strong diurnal temperature variations bring out a beautiful bouquet in the wine.
Wine Production: Grapes are collected in bins (max 250 kg) then destemmed and crushed. The wine is then clarified in stainless steel tanks. The wine is filtered by using bentonite and subsequent filtration. Lunaria has the typical characters of Castelluccio Sauvignon blanc, minarality and its own freshness and drinkability.
Tasting Notes: Straw yellow color, with metallic and green hints. The bouquet is refined, precise and well concentrated. Sweet and green at intervals, with a well defined hint of citrus fruits skin (particularly lime and grapefruit). Dry, with reasonable body, sustained by an acidulous vein and almost spicy hot. An aromatic taste that returns as an after-bouquet. Good persistence.
